Ugly Betty: A Fashionable Cause

UglyBetty2Charity is the new black! On its Oct. 16 episode, Ugly Betty partners with the United Nations Foundation's Nothing But Nets global campaign to stop the spread of malaria in Africa.

Newly promoted features editor Betty Suarez convinces her magazine to showcase the life-saving netting material in a fashion spread

The Plus ventured to New York City's UN building, where cast members from the hit ABC series revealed their show's contributions to such a worthy effort.

"Betty has great heart and soul. It's not a stretch that she would come from a place to help other people," said Judith Light, who plays magazine mogul Claire Meade.

"The campaign's been around since 2006, and I had never heard of it," confessed Tony Plana, who stars as Betty's dad.

"For me, this was an awakening of the suffering happening in Africa. Knowing how $10 will save one child's life is why I'm so proud to be a part of this show."

New mom Ana Ortiz, who plays Betty's sister Hilda, feels an even stronger personal connection.

"Children are so vulnerable, especially out there," she shared. "That something so simple as a net can make a difference is wonderful. "
